Canada is a vast country with geography and geology that fills volumes. This country, known and understood by indigenous peoples for millennia, is still a developing story to geologists, mineralogists and gemmologists. We all know the diamond wealth buried in many parts of the country, but other gems have been discovered and continue to be found in most provinces and territories. CGA founder, Dean Field, as a child, collected agates on the beaches near his home in Nova Scotia, selling them to tourists from the USA. We will explore some of the gems that are found in Canada, and what Canadian gems are available for use in the jewellery market.
